A rather pointless piece by the Arstechnica’s Ryan Paul about Linux kernel statistics. Note how he attempts to downplay the minuscule contributions of independent developers:

“The Linux Foundation report highlights the kernel’s top individual and corporate contributors. Between version 2.6.30 and 2.6.35, approximately 19 percent of kernel development was done by independent contributors with no corporate affiliation. “

Wow!? 19%?! That’s…not that big for a project that is supposedly designed with individual contributions in mind.

“Google’s contributions account for 0.7 percent of the changes made to the kernel between .30 and .35.”
I’m so surprised!

I do wonder whether Linus Torvalds as LF employee counts as corporate contributor, too…

So, if it wasn’t for evil proprietary companies like IBM, linux would be the one fifth of what it is today. Nice!

If you think of it, every mildly succesful open source project out there is funded by some megacorp. Firefox is Google’s bitch, Ubuntu is Yahoo’s bitch, Linux is IBM’s bitch and MySQL is Sun’s bitch.

The problem with this is that, megacorps only fund things that serve their purpose, so if any of these open source projects suddenly becomes useless to the megacorp that’s funding it, it’s instant stagnation time. This is clearly demonstrated in Google gradually losing interest in Firefox (nobody knows what will happen after version 4, as funding expires on 2011) and MySQL now belonging to Oracle, the biggest proprietary SQL software maker in the world (ouch!)
I live for the moment IBM loses interest in linux, and the fail of desktop linux is officialized.

The irony? All there open source projects led to the demise of many small independent software companies (eg linux and sgi irix) so when the funding stops, open source practically hands the world to the aforementioned megacorps on a silver plate. Nice!

I hope wannabefree is reading this (just don’t expect him to post a reply, being the coward he is)

Go on, I’m interested. Why is Ubuntu Yahoo’s bitch?

I’m not at all disagreing, because your argument in general is compelling. I’m just interested in the relationship between Yahoo and Canonical…
