zealot- sudo apt-get install vlc.
victim- but the version in the repository is outdated
zealot- download the source, ConfigureMakeMakeIntstall™

victim- i ran the magic ConfigureMakeMakeIntstall™ but it failed
zealot- LinuxIsPerfect so you must be an idiot, and you shouldn’t really be using a computer anyway
Most linux dostro come wih a package manager tied to a repository to mask the ugly face of software installation under linux. However, try and compile anything outside of the restricted repository, and one thing will immediately become
apparent:
when you compile software under linux you ARE the package manager

The really depressing thing about this is that I just made it up myself — and somebody else beat me to it.
Well done, Sir/Madam!
Nothing new under the Brown Sky Of Death, is there?

Regard the wonders of a little half-baked lad from Orpington whose eyes get tired before he reaches the last paragraph…
what boggles the mind is that this nerd hell was foisted on average consumers. most technicians would fail to operate linux, as I know from working in a shop. it is becoming apparent why most people with money buy apples. for a few hundred dollars you don’t have to deal with buggy, shoddy, software and poor hw/sw integration. nerds enjoy patching drivers and dicking around with compile flags, 99.9999% of people don’t.
